Event Description:
Wage inequality increased across the board during the past 40 years, a fact brought into relief during the most recent economic downturn. Alongside rising economic inequality are a number identities (racial, ethnic, gender, etc.) that play a role in deciding where one falls on that line of inequality. This is particularly the case when considering concepts like “professionalism” and workplace social expectations, which very often carry normative notions of workplace identity. Does “professionalism” reinforce already-existing inequalities? Can broader notions of the social spaces of work create more opportunities for a more diverse workforce? Does attention to these issues create opportunities to address rising inequality? Can creating a more caring workplace for workers address both identity and inequality?
