Solarize Indiana coming to Fort Wayne
Name:
Solarize Indiana coming to Fort Wayne
Date:
December 14, 2019
Time:
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM EST
Event Description:
Solarize Indiana, a grassroots community group, will sponsor an informational meeting at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Georgetown Branch of the Allen County Library to tell area residents and business owners how they can add solar panels on their houses or businesses to offset their electric bills. Efforts also will be made during the meeting to help the Fort Wayne area organize a local Solarize Indiana branch. “Home owners and business who consider installing solar soon can still receive a reduction in their taxes to offset the costs of adding solar energy to their energy mix,” said Carolyn Vann, one of the organizers of the East Central Indiana branch of Solarize Indiana and a presenter at the Dec. 14 Fort Wayne meeting. The 30% federal tax credit for installing solar is still in effect in 2019, declining to 26% in 2020, 22% in 2021. Starting in 2022, there will no longer be a federal tax credit. Those with an investor-owned utility also will have net metering until mid-year 2032 if their system is installed before the end of June 2022. A third benefit of installing solar though Solarize Indiana is group pricing. In addition, adding solar does not affect the assessed value of a structure and will not increase the owner’s property taxes. The addition of solar has the potential to increase property value, however. Evaluations for solar installations are free through Solarize Indiana, and there are no payments or any obligation until a contract is signed with the installer. Hundreds of installations have taken place in the Bloomington, Muncie and Indianapolis areas in connection with this grassroots effort, which began in 2017.
