Event Description:

Fort Wayne City Utilities is Digging Down to Clean-Up
Presentation to Provide Details of the Tunnel Works Program

Fort Wayne City Utilities is gearing up for a “once in a lifetime” project that represents a major investment in sewer infrastructure and will impact the city and surrounding areas for generations to come!

The Tunnel Works Program is the capstone in the City’s 18-year long effort to reduce the amount of combined sewage that overflows into the City’s rivers when it rains.  The deep rock tunnel and associated infrastructure, such as drop shafts and near surface sewers, will collect more of the combined sanitary sewage and stormwater that would otherwise  go to the St. Marys and Maumee Rivers. The tunnel will transport the wastewater to the sewage treatment plant where it will go through the treatment process before being released to the Maumee River. Construction of the tunnel and other sewer system improvements will result in a 90% reduction in the amount of combined sewage being released to the rivers, thereby making them an even greater asset to the community.

The tunnel itself will be an engineering marvel, as is the scientific analysis currently ongoing to develop the best design. The tunnel will extend more than five miles from Foster Park to the sewage treatment plant on Dwenger Avenue.  It will be constructed using a tunnel boring machine and will be located in bedrock between 150 and 250 feet below ground.  This sewer system investment will not only be a major improvement for public health and river ecology, but will provide important economic development opportunities and environmental benefits to our region. Join us to learn how City Utilities plans to ‘dig down to clean up’ and support regional growth and quality of life far into the future.
